Cologne, 22 March 2016 – ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaker, today announces SolarWall®, a solar air heating system, for the German market. This innovative technology is a highly effective solar air heating system that displaces up to 50% of a building’s space heating expense.

New regulation focused on the heating of buildings came into effect in Germany on 1 January 2016. Under this new legislation buildings are required to use 25% less energy and retrofit fresh-air ventilation systems. Technologies like the SolarWall® Air Heating system offer a unique solution in all new constructions to meet these regulatory requirements. The newly crafted energy standard is perfectly aligned with one of the main sources of GHG emissions in the building sector, which is space heating.

The European Union is committed to a 20% renewable energy target by 2020. Space heating represents up to half of a building’s energy demand but the lack of viable clean technologies that address the huge quantities of energy required for space or process heating continues to be a challenge to attaining the 2020 targets.

SolarWall® – as a building integrated system – utilizes solar radiation to deliver naturally warmed fresh air into buildings, providing a renewable heat source. Solar Cooling Patent Granted to SolarWall® Inventor

The U.S. Patent Office has granted SolarWall® inventor, John Hollick, patent #8,827,779 titled “Method and Apparatus for Cooling Ventilation Air for a Building”. The invention uses a transpired solar collector to take advantage of a well-known phenomenon called nocturnal radiation cooling which can cool air below ambient from sunset to sunrise.

“Cooling air below ambient using nocturnal energy has long been known but no one has been able to come up with a simple and economical way to harness this free cold energy, until now. We call the system “NightSolar®” and it connects to HVAC economizers. At the same time, it shades and ventilates roofs preventing the sun’s rays from reaching the roof, which can account for half of a building’s cooling demand” states Hollick.

The system works day and night in the summer with the daytime solar heat collected the same way as a conventional SolarWall® system, while also simultaneously shading and ventilating the roof. The heat can either be dissipated or used to heat water or industrial processes. At night these same panels will cool air as much as 10 degrees F below ambient when connected to the economizers on typical HVAC units. In the winter, the solar energy heats the air entering the same HVAC units.

ASHRAE Technology Award Recognizes Innovation at New NREL Building

January 16, 2013 – The new NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Research Facility in Golden, Colorado has been named the recipient of a 2013 Technology Award from ASHRAE. These prestigious awards recognize outstanding achievements in the area of building design and technology integration that serve as a model to other ASHRAE members. The new NREL complex is the preeminent national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy and it was singled-out for recognition because of its success with building-integrated energy systems, including a flagship 8,600 ft2 SolarWall® air heating and ventilation system that spans the south façade.

Incorporating the SolarWall® technology into the new building was a natural fit because NREL had been involved with the development of the SolarWall® transpired collector technology, and had officially referred to it as being “the most reliable, best performing, and lowest cost solar heating system for commercial and industrial buildings.” The charcoal-colored SolarWall system was seamlessly integrated into two different south facades – around dozens of windows – where it will pre-heat the fresh ventilation air using the sun, reducing heating costs and GHG emissions.

NREL’s ASHRAE Technology Award is indicative of the emphasis that is now being placed on integrated energy solutions that enhance the overall operation of the building. Toronto, December 14, 2011 — Conserval Engineering and SolarWall Europe have been named the recipient of a 2011 SME Canada-France award in a ceremony in Paris that was attended by the Honourable Ed Fast, the Canadian Minister of International Trade and Minster for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Pierre Lellouche, France’s Secretary of State for Foreign Trade.

Minister Fast and Secretary of State Lellouche presented the SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) awards to recognize two enterprises that have been successful in both countries. This year, the awards recognized Conserval Engineering for their excellent in the development and commercialization of the SolarWall® air heating technology and their successful foray into the French market vis-à-vis SolarWall Europe Sarl.

The SME Awards were presented as part of a trade visit between the two countries that focused on increased collaboration between the two countries in the areas of trade, innovation and science and technology. Speaking on the two companies that were presented with the award, Minister Fast said: “These two companies are examples of businesses whose innovation and technological advancements have made them front-runners in their fields and at the same time clearly show the benefit of closer Canada-France economic ties. Thanks to their success at home and abroad, they are creating jobs and prosperity for workers in both our countries.”

During his visit, Minister Fast saw Conserval Engineering’s world-class technology first-hand. The SolarWall technology heats building ventilation air and improves indoor air quality, while offering substantial energy savings to commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. The company expects significant growth in demand for the technology in Europe based on its cost-effectiveness and the current Renewable Heat Targets that are in place across the European Union. Their clients in France include Toyota Motor Manufacturing and the famous town of Fontainbleau, as well as other industrial sites, retail stores, colleges, gymnasiums, schools, multi-unit buildings, offices and warehouses.
